The CRF Managers work package group provides a constructive forum for CRF Managers to:

  • share knowledge and expertise
  • provide up to date information on best practice
  • share future plans, tools and resources available as they are produced by other Theme Groups

The Laboratory Managers Group (LMG) offer support for the implementation of robust laboratory practices that meet the standards and requirements of governing bodies, such as the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

The LMG have produced tools and guidance documents relating to laboratory equipment, standard operating procedures, chain of custody forms, deviation forms, clinical trial checklists, mandatory temperature monitoring systems and health and safety documents. The Intensity work package Group has developed the Study Intensity Tool to assist research teams in assessing research workload and inform workforce planning decision. The tool accurately predicts the Whole Time Equivalent (WTE) staffing numbers required for the efficient delivery of a specific clinical study, and has new functionality based on user feedback along with a standalone Study Intensity Tool for paediatric facilities.

The tool is available to download from the UKCRF Network Portal (for access to the Portal please contact us). The group delivers monthly web-based training for beginners on how to use the tool as well as monthly Q&A sessions. For more information please visit our training page by clicking here.

WP2: Information Management and Technology Work Group

The Information Management and Technology (IM&T) Working Group shares ideas and expertise related to Information Systems Developments; emerging software technology, and Data and Information Management.  Activities include considering cross-site IM&T developments, the use of commonly developed systems and making IT recommendations to CRF Senior Management.

The Education and Training Work Group provides a forum where staff who lead on education and training in their CRF can collaborate, share expertise and develop new resources.

The Group have created guidance documents and training tools to support CRFs in training their staff. These documents are regularly reviewed and refined using feedback from CRFs. The group continues to contribute to and lead on projects derived from the Workforce Development Work Package strategic objectives.

The Clinical Research Delivery (previous named the Research Nurses and Practitioners) provides support to adult and paediatric research nurses, advanced nurse practitioners, clinical research practitioners and allied health professions. The Group champions the identity and contribution of clinical research staff, who are highly valued within CRFs.

Through the development of standards and best practice guidance, the Group leads on the maintenance and improvement of patient experience and safety within research, and supports the Workforce Development strategic objectives. The Group also provides a forum where nursing staff and practitioners from various CRFs come together to share ideas and expertise.

The Quality Assurance (QA) Work Group supports collaborative working by sharing good practice and developing guidance documents and tools. The Group develops common QA systems in CRFs to support high quality, safe and compliant research practices across the Network.

The Group also provides a forum where staff who lead on QA in their CRF can discuss QA topics via group meetings, online forums and workshops. Through collaboration the QA Group encourages a culture of continual quality improvement in every CRF in the Network.

The Involvement and Inclusion Work Package Groups provide a forum for Clinical Research Facility (CRF) Patient & Public Involvement & Engagement (PPIE) and Research Inclusion Leads to support initiatives, expand involvement with the Research Champion programme and link with national PPIE and Research Inclusion groups and initiatives.

  • Support CRF PPIE and Research Inclusion Leads
  • Provide Guidance, Training and Share Best Practice
  • Understand CRF PPIE and Research Inclusion Challenges
  • Task and Finish Groups
